Elena Rodriguez

On January 26th last year, there was a strange happening in some town in a deserted part of southern California, close to Arizona. Somewhere.

At a small shack next to a small house, there stood a broom, a rake, a shovel and a wheelbarrow. Each of these items were lined perfectly straight against the outside of the wooden shack.

Elena Rodriguez walked in through the loose-swinging piece of plywood she used for a door. There was nothing in the single dark room except for jars sitting on shelves and a large table in the middle of the floor. In the jars were liquids and small solid things that looked like small dead animals of some kind or pieces of animals.

Sitting on the table was nothing but a large black cat licking its paws. It paused for a moment to stare at her, then continued his grooming.

"Come here, Diablo," Elena Rodriguez spoke softly.

The cat jumped off the table into her arms, turned over, crawled up her arm and licked her face. Elena Rodriguez wore an emerald green dress and a large intricate turquoise necklace.

As she walked barefoot through the wet grass, she talked to Diablo. It was late this evening, but the sun would not show for a while. Elena hoped it would never show. "It's too late for you to be out here, Diablo," the tall female exclaimed to her precious dark kitty, who purred and meowed his answer of, "I really don't care!"

When they returned to the house, Elena spoke again. "Do you know how late it is, Diablo? Look at the clock. What time is it? Canyou tell me, Diablo?"

In the middle of her tender nurturing, she glanced at the clock. It was eleven fifty-seven.

"Oh no!" Elena shouted in horror. She looked at the cat, who was starting to shake violently. As she dropped the cat on its head, she screamed, "I don't believe I waited this long! Diablo," she called sweetly. "Diablo, come here, kitty."

The cat just looked at her and continued to convulse. its fur grew pale and the whiskers that ran from its snout grew. Dagger-like fangs grew where tiny teeth previously occupied. Fur was now a dirty white and seemed to cover half of its body, which had grown to half the size of Elena. Pupils dilated and, eventually, there was nothing left but white eyes.

"NO!" Elena screamed. "I won't let you do it again. You're not going to do it to me again!"

She grabbed the nearest thing, which was a hammer sitting on the counter, and proceeded to smash its head and eyes and (horns?)! Suddenly wasn't in her hand anymore. It had seemingly flown across the room like a grasshopper. As she realized that she was now helpless against this horrific bulk of beast before her, she let out a final scream!

* * * * * *

Twelve, midnight.

A large black cat sat in the middle of the kitchen floor licking its paws. It paused for a moment to stare at the largesty piece of Elena Rodriguez that lay nearest him, then continued his grooming.
